So I’ve listened to this album quite a few times. And my verdict? It’s great. Now to be fair, I love Eminem. I’ve always loved him. A while ago I actually started writing a long blog post explaining how he has been one of my biggest musical inspirations over the years. I never got around to finishing it (I will soon, though). Now on to Relapse. Sure there’s some weak tracks. The singles in particular. Did you really expect the singles to be mind-blowing? “The Real Slim Shady” is arguably one of his most annoying songs and it came from arguably his best album. The singles are always throw-away songs for the long term. That’s a given. Now, as for this newfound sing-rapping he’s been doing. I don’t like it either. I much prefer the angry, fire-spitting Em of old. But after giving Relapse a few spins, you can’t deny that he is still as clever as ever. And his rhythms. My god! His rhythmic ability is BY FAR the greatest that rap has ever seen. In the song posted below (“Underground” – which happens to be the best song on the album and what I hope this year’s second Shady release brings more of) showcases his ability to bend the rules of mainstream rap rhythms. The chorus hook is in 5 over a beat that’s in 8! If this means nothing to you, it’s not particularly difficult but my point is that this time signature is absolutely not seen in mainstream rap, let alone mainstream music. And it’s over the chorus!
On every one of Em’s albums, there’s songs I skip every time. And this album will be no different. I honestly expected the album to a Will-Smith-esque daddy-rapping-to-daughter album of clunkers, but the only time he even brings up Haley Jade is to talk about her finding him passed out on ’scrip drugs. Peep the song and if you still hate it, then hate away.

I totally agree with you. I’ve liked Eminem for almost six years and I saw him in concert on the anger management 3 tour. Beautiful is probably my favorite song off the album.

hmmm, I’m not really a fan. Only ever really listened to the marshall mathers LP (and that was only because my sister – who is missing the musical taste gene- played it ALL the time) but to be fair, that was a pretty ok album. After that i kinda gave up on him due to a few incredbly annoying songs. Might give this album a listen, but I’m not expecting much from it. I just can’t get excited by rap.
Oh, and FYI – Big Willie Style is a kick ass album.

I usually listen to your recommendations. I did listen to those albums you’ve listed awhile back and I found that I agreed with some of your insight.
So, I listened to the track. I was never really into Eminem but I did peg him to be some sort of genuis. The dude can write, for sure, and his ability shines in this song. And my knowledge of music – the theory, if that’s what it is – is probably not as good as yours but I can see why the chorus has got you amazed. It’s hard to get used to but it works. Really well too. What I greatly don’t appreciate is his lyrics in this one. I know he’s admitted to being homophobic but his hate for them is greatly reflected in these lyrics. But he’s gotta speak his mind…
