“The Missing Piece” performance at New Voices 8!

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

So, as some of you may know, I’ve been working on re-writing Razia’s Shadow for the stage. That is, the musical theatre stage. I’ve remained sort of secretive about the whole thing up to this point, as it’s a long process that I’m wading through properly and, being so new to this world, quite carefully. I’m very lucky to have some amazing people helping me/us through the process and I couldn’t be more excited about the direction of everything. This version of “The Missing Piece” has altered lyrics to fit into an altered storyline (that are both still very much a work in progress). Enjoy and I’ll keep you all in the loop more from here on out! View in HD here!

    NOOOO! La arruinaste!!

  2. Marty Says:

Great performance. Can’t wait to hear more about this.

  3. thomas Says:

Haha ruined?? Braulio you silly goose, I have to change a lot about the story and lyrics to make Razia’s be the best it can be on a stage. It’s going to inevitably be very different than the album some of you have grown to love. You have to have an open mind and not compare the two versions. It won’t be ruined, promise!

  4. Chris Says:

Sounding good so far. :) The new lyrics are sweet!

  5. Cata Says:

    I love Razia’s Shadow (:

  6. Isaac Says:

    this is awesome!
a while back, a friend of mine sent me some links to other staged performances of razia’s at contemporary classics, but for some reason i cant find them on youtube anymore!
do you know what happened to them?

  7. Bree Says:

I am so excited to hear this new version and to see it. It’s very exciting. =)

  8. Jamie Says:

I loved the piano parts, the guy on keys is very good :)

  9. Kate Says:

It might be kind of awesome to have two versions, like the original and a reboot. But it’ll only be awesome if the stage version is going to accessible… Any idea where/how it might be staged?

  10. Andrew Says:

I must admit, I wasn’t expecting it to have changed so much. Not that I don’t like it. It’s just the story line is a lot less apparent in this version. But I won’t judge it till I know the whole re-scripted plot. And this is definitely the best live performance I’ve heard from you : )

  11. nick from cleveland Says:

thomas, once again another brilliant step, 3:48 and beyond is completely beautiful. bravo sir!
come back to cleveland soon. the grog shop misses you!

  12. kevin y. Says:

Really sweet. Really love the harmonization at the end. Can’t wait to see/hear more about Razia’s Shadow on stage.

  13. Maggie McCann Says:

I really like what you’ve done with this song! I was surprised that you changed the lyrics, but I think it gave your audience more insight on the charecters. I can’t wait to see the finished product

  14. Belle Says:

I loved it. I can’t wait for your new version to be finished. As much as I love the original I can really see how much that you can make it ever better and longer and more fantastic then it already is. You definitly need to make sure that you keep brendon urie as pallis because he is amazing…. if you rerecord it that is.

  15. thomas Says:

Glad you guys like it! I know it’s very weird to hear a familiar song with changed lyrics… but you have to bare with me, it’ll be worth it in the end, I promise! This song, for example, is now being sung between Adakias and the Princess… exciting huh??

  16. thomas Says:

    Kate – Broadway. 2012.

    …right?! :)

  17. Elaine Says:

I was a little confused until I read your last comment on this haha. How great! The lyrics are still beautiful, but the flow was a little off. Also, I really love the ending harmony.
Wherever and whenever Razia’s Shadow is on stage, my friends and I will defiantly be there to see it. :)

  18. alejandro Says:

I guess it sounds off because I’m used to the other version of the song, but I’ll grow to like it. I’m sure the finished Razia’s (stage version) will be great

  19. Crystal Says:

This sounds so good! I can’t wait to hear more of it and get the opportunity to see it! I’m still working on my own conception of the costumes based off this album.

  20. Wolfy Says:

Great! I am SO excited about this :)

  21. Patrick Says:

This is gonna be awesome. People need to hear this musical! My family enjoys the original musical (at least my brother has heard it) but this is going to be amazing. I’m going to try and get my school to perform it. Thomas I keep putting Wonderland on repeat cause it’s so good. Any plans on releasing another album?

  22. Johannes Says:

i think its really good! im directing razia’s at my school right now! you should come see it in may =]

  23. Amanda Dubs Says:

If this makes it to a professional stage I will try my hardest to be there opening weekend. I absolutely adore this musical and Thomas, you’ve helped my musical taste more than you can know the past few years. I can’t wait :)

  24. Amanda Says:

It’s adakias singing this part? Does that mean the while story is going to be about him and anhura? I assume if you didn’t have a narrator of would be dfficult to do two halve on stage. It sounds great!

  25. Carly Supertramp Says:

Thomas, i think it sounds great, its basically the same and i would’t say ruined!!! Obviously if the story is being adapted the songs will need to be also or it wouldnt make sense visually. Wish my husband and i could see it! one of our fave things to listen to EVER, and imagine the costumes and story as were listening to it….. but we are in Sydney so im doubting it :(

  26. Braulio Says:

I was kidding, I love this version :D

  27. Hissora Says:

Wow this is awesome. I really like what you did at the end with both of you guys singing together. It fits well. :3 I just really hope that since you are having this song for Adakias and Anhura that you won’t replace ‘It’s True Love’ with this song, or at least keep the part where Adakias is all like, ‘I can’t let her learn about my past… etc etc’ because that’s like my favorite part of the whole musical XP

  28. Claire Says:

Wow, Broadway 2012???!! That is incredibly exciting! Congrats! Do you know when/if you will be having auditions?? Will you have a few pre-broadway productions to test out the book and music?

  29. Bethanie Says:

BRODWAY 2012!! NO WAYYYYYYY. I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!! YIPEEEEE!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this girl you’ve chose for Nidria! I feel like I’ve seen her before is she from something??? PULEEZ keep us updated on every thing.

  30. Alex Says:

yeah, I like this version a lot but don’t cut “it’s true love”=(

  31. dave Says:

just wondering if the new versions of the songs are gonna be re-recorded at all or if they’re gonna only be used for the theatre show thing?

  32. Rick Says:

It’s a great song and the harmony you guys did was very moving. I think people are forgetting about the time flow when they listen to the record that they’ve grown to love, because this song makes absolute sense as to why it was rewritten for Adiakias and Anhura.
In plays, there’s often a reprise (usage of the same song in a different context such as different characters singing or just to show a flow of time or insight [such as the "Johanna" song in Sweeney Todd, "I'm Not That Girl" in Wicked or "Lombard" in Stop the World I Want to Get Off]) and on the original, the story jumps from Adiakias leaving the Dark, to seeing the princess, and the next song they confess their True Love in a matter or seconds.
I can see this song between the Exit and True Love to give time for the two to meet and show interest in one another, not necessarily that the original Missing Piece and True Love are going to be cut.
It’s a great song and I was worried (in my own planning of this production) how to slow that part down so that Adiakias and the Princess had a chance to meet first.
Thomas, I am in awe of you and that you are growing as such a creative artist and expanding what you do, can’t wait to find out more of what you’re working on!
