Phoenix is working on the score/soundtrack/sound design for Lost In Translation/Virgin Suicides director Sofia Coppola’s next film Somewhere. Thomas Mar, the frontman for the group had this to say about the project:

“It’s very minimal,” said Mars of the new work. “It’s almost like sound design. It wasn’t like writing songs, it was more about trying to make a sound that fits with a Ferrari and the city of Los Angeles’ theme. It was more of an engineer work than a composer.”

Somewhere tells the story of Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff), “a bad-boy A-List actor stumbling through a life of excess while living at Hollywood’s legendary Chateau Marmont Hotel. His days are a haze of drinks, girls, fast cars and fawning fans. Cocooned in this celebrity-induced artificial world, Johnny has lost all sense of his true self. Until, that is, his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) unexpectedly shows up and unwittingly begins to anchor him. Johnny’s fragile connection to real life slowly revives in her presence. So when the time comes fro Cleo to leave, his sense of loss is palpable, but the gift of hope she has also brought him leads to a beautiful, poetic denouement imbued with all of Coppola’s remarkable powers to conjure mood and atmosphere.”

So, as some of you may know, I’ve been working on re-writing Razia’s Shadow for the stage. That is, the musical theatre stage. I’ve remained sort of secretive about the whole thing up to this point, as it’s a long process that I’m wading through properly and, being so new to this world, quite carefully. I’m very lucky to have some amazing people helping me/us through the process and I couldn’t be more excited about the direction of everything. This version of “The Missing Piece” has altered lyrics to fit into an altered storyline (that are both still very much a work in progress). I am so impressed! Most people don’t realize how hard these songs are to sing (especially when you’re all alone on stage with just the music). Watching these gave me goosebumps! To see someone else put this on, in their best capacity, and sing their hearts out to the songs, is a very cool feeling. Adakias’ protrayer has a great voice; you guys should be very proud. I hope to see more videos soon!

The company is an idea Casey and I have talked a lot about. It gives smaller, unsigned bands the opportunity for high-quality mixes without paying an arm and a leg at a local studio. The site went live today and we’ve already got a great response. To get the ball rolling, songs will be $200 a pop. Check the site out. I honestly wish there was something like this around when I was recording demos and trying to get my band signed. We are going to make it very easy for anyone with some desire and chops to have some amazing-sounding tracks. Shoot us an email with any questions!
